Coastal Tree Care and Lopping in North Beach

North Beach gardens get the full salt and wind of the coast. Palms, pines and tough coastal screens dominate, and the jobs reflect it: clean-outs, reductions and the occasional big removal.

Tree work in North Beach

North Beach runs along the coast north of Watermans Bay, with the beach and its jetty at the heart of the suburb. Many streets are within a short walk of the water, and gardens face the full force of salt-laden sea breezes and winter fronts.

Housing is a mix. Some original beach houses remain on their blocks, while others have been replaced by larger two-storey homes on smaller lots. Gardens tend to be compact, and trees often sit close to walls, paving and the neighbour's fence.

Tree Loppers Scarborough arranges tree lopping, pruning, removal, hedge work and stump grinding for North Beach homes. A local contractor visits the site and quotes in writing.

Trees that suit the salt

Gardens here favour plants that tolerate salt and wind: Norfolk Island pines, Rottnest Island pines, WA peppermints, coastal tea tree and wattles, and palms of various kinds. Frangipanis do well in sheltered courtyards.

Even the tough species need maintenance. Salt and wind kill twigs and fronds, and dense screens can open up or collapse. The most common North Beach jobs include:

  • cleaning dead fronds and seed stalks from palms
  • clearing dead tiers and cones from Norfolk Island pines
  • trimming and reducing coastal hedges and screens
  • lifting peppermints off roofs and paths
  • removing tall pines or palms that have outgrown the block

Palms on small blocks

Palms are popular near the beach, but tall cotton palms and date palms can become hard to service. Their heads hold heavy fronds and seed stalks that drop in strong winds. Regular clean-outs keep them tidy and safer. When a palm grows beyond easy reach or too close to a house, removal in sections may be the best option.

Working close to buildings

With homes built close together, almost all tree work in North Beach involves lowering branches and wood on ropes past roofs, gutters, windows and fences. Access is often through a side gate or garage, so mention the narrowest point when you enquire. Tight sites take longer, which is reflected in the quote.

Shelter and planting

If a tree has to come out, consider what replaces it. A screen of salt-tolerant shrubs on the windward side can shelter the rest of the garden. The coastal tree care guide suggests species that cope with the conditions.

Q&A

Straight answers to common questions

How often should palms in North Beach be cleaned?

It depends on the species and how fast they grow, but many palms need dead fronds and seed stalks removed every year or two. Leaving them builds a heavy skirt that can fall in storms and harbour pests.

Can a Norfolk Island pine be made shorter?

Not without ruining it. Cutting the top out leaves an ugly, unstable tree. Dead lower branches and cones can be cleared, and a tree that is simply too big for the block is usually removed in sections.

Why does my coastal hedge keep dying in patches?

Salt, wind and summer dryness all play a part. Patches can also die if the hedge has been trimmed back into old, bare wood. Better watering, mulch and gentler, regular trimming usually help. Some species cope better with salt than others.

Can tree work be done if I live in a two-storey on a small lot?

Yes. Trees on small lots are usually climbed and lowered in pieces, and the wood is carried out to the street. Access through a side gate or garage is common.
